4 Types of Natural Antibiotics And Their Uses

When we get sick, we often run to the doctor to get an antibiotic prescription to make us well. Be careful, otherwise we run the risk of building up a resistance to the limited number of antibiotics. Don’t get me wrong there are times when we need to acquire a prescription in order to get well.

On the other hand, I would like to share with you some of nature’s antibiotics. These natural antibiotics can be used as a preventative method to ward off sickness, and are great additions alongside conventional antibiotics to speed up the process of recovery.

1) Garlic

• rich in the antibiotic sulfur compound Allicin which protects the body against cell damage
• helps to prevent and reduce the severity of the flu and common cold
• on a broad spectrum, garlic is often seen to be more effective than other antibiotics
• it is recommended that you use fresh garlic cloves, with a green stripe running through for the best results
• talk to your doctor as garlic can interfere with some medications
• garlic can kill off some of the good bacteria in the gut so it’s important to take a probiotic supplement

Method of use: Consume 1 crushed or chopped clove daily – the cloves must be crushed to release their antibiotic properties. Allicin is absorbed into the blood stream through the digestive track. Let the crushed clove sit for 5 minutes to make sure that their antibiotic properties are fully released. If you are sick increase clove consumption to 3-4 cloves daily.

2) Raw Honey

• in the past, honey was rubbed into the wounds of soldiers to prevent and treat infections
• Manuka honey from New Zealand has the highest antibiotic properties
• the enzymes in honey release hydrogen peroxide to help fight infection
• reduces the growth of bacteria
• promotes the removal of toxins from blood and liver
• combined with cinnamon, honey increases white blood cells counts

Method of use: Manuka honey can be rubbed directly onto the skin to combat the effects and severity of skin infections, rashes, cuts, and bites. A teaspoon can be taken orally to help soothe a sore throat, fight internal infection, and ease the digestive tract.

3) Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

• helps fight fungal infections such as Candida
• purifies blood and aids in circulation
• ACV regulates the PH levels of the skin
• fights unhealthy bacteria in the digestive tract
• strengthens the lymphatic system which filters toxins in the body

Method of use: Simply mix 1-2 TBSP of ACV in a cup of hot or cold water daily (can mix with honey too for better flavor and double the goodness!) ACV mixed with oil makes an excellent base for salad dressings. Many recipes for ACV immunity tonics are available to you online.

4) Onions

• the antibiotic properties come from the active sulfur compound Allicin
• helps to prevent the absorption of harmful bacteria
• absorb bacteria from their surroundings such as viruses and bugs in external enviornment
• improves the bio-availability of vitamin C to help fight infections
• fights inflammation caused by infection

Method of use: To activate the antibiotic compounds in onions leave them on the counter after cutting for 5 minutes. Be sure to use fresh onions as they absorb bacteria from their surroundings. Can be consumed raw and put in salads and sandwiches.Onions are also a great addition to soups and stews.
