How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

Alexandra Absi · Oct 13 2016

Traveling can have a major impact on our bodies, from exploiting our energy to introducing us to armies of germs, changes in climate, different cultures and resources – these are all factors of traveling we must plan for. Whether it’s overseas or a few states down the way, you and your body need to be prepared, because remember- health always comes first!

1.) Do your research.

Is it a tap-water safe Country? What foods should you stay away from? Be careful and always drink bottled water if you’re unsure – to the extent of brushing your teeth with it. Research restaurants before going into them. You can never know too much – and that’s why we love our internet so much!

2.) Have your supplements ready!

photo-1453825517242-1a1527bf0a39Vitamins, allergy medicine, airborne… etc. – this is a must! On airplanes, the low humidity causes your skin and nose to dry and therefore leaves you more susceptible to catching germs. Keep your hands away from your face and be weary about eating off of food trays as they carry high levels of bacteria… “60% of airplane food trays carry MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) bacteria.” (Prevention) Don’t forget too, that climate change can leave you with allergies you didn’t even know you had, and make you feel sick as a dog. Always be prepared.

3.) Always have your sanitizer and lotion at hand, always.

Your skin will dry out easily from airplanes and changes in weather. Also – traveling in general is a very germ-filled experience. Planes, buses, taxis, hotels, public restrooms, parks, a foreign land – all have high populations of germs. Sanitize, sanitize, sanitize!
Be on top of your hydration. Traveling can be exhausting and hard on the body, and hydration is one of the most important factors to staying healthy.

4.) Carry snacks.

Don’t always turn to caffeine for energy – have healthy, energizing snacks on hand like nuts. You won’t regret it!

5.) Get the sleep your body needs.

If you’re jet lagged, don’t hit the hay – the best thing you can do is stay up and accustom yourself to the local time. Take a natural sleep aid like LUNA an hour before bed– it will help you sleep better when it’s time for it, and will help you to sleep through the night. But – don’t deprive yourself of your typical amount of rest. 7-8 hours a night is a must, especially when traveling.

It’s important that we always do our research before going away – and not just for the fun stuff! How would you enjoy it anyway, if you weren’t healthy!? Know your stuff and prepare for your health, so you can enjoy the new roads ahead, with the same, healthy you.
