13 Natural Ways to Relieve PMS
It’s wonderful being a woman, but when PMS and menstrual cramps show their face and you want to crawl into a little ball under your blankets, you forget about all your Wonder Woman powers. PMS, which stands for Premenstrual Syndrome, is a set of symptoms that start in the second half of the cycle, and include “fun” things such as irritability (guilty!), tender breasts, bloating, food cravings, nausea, cramps, and fatigue. Then, as the period begins, many women suffer from menstrual cramps and some even opt to treat them with heavy prescription painkillers.
Hormones play a huge role in this, as well as nutrition. During the cycle, estrogen and progesterone hormones change, which causes these symptoms. It’s important to get the hormones in balance, so your symptoms can be brought to a minimum, if not gone completely.
Try the following tips to help you alleviate your period related pain this month:
1.) Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they tend to make cramps worse for many women by causing water retention.
2.) Get enough sleep!
3.) Stay hydrated. Water helps prevent water retention and bloating.
4.) Avoid a lot of Omega-6 (such as margarine, canola oil, soybean oil, etc).
5.) Stay green. Try to avoid chemicals in your food, and in your cleaning supplies.
6.) Eat good fats such as avocados, nuts, coconut and olive oils.
7.) Avoid inflammatory foods. Depending on the person, that might be dairy, grains, altered oils. Note how these products make you feel, and as mentioned above, try to avoid unhealthy/altered oils altogether.
8.) Try to avoid plastic containers and water bottles, and use organic feminine products as some women don’t react well to the chemicals present.
9.) Even though it seems like the last thing you want to do, get some low impact exercise! Getting your body to move (and the blood and lymph to flow throughout the body) may alleviate your cramps.
10.) Use a hot water bottle or a heating pad to help the contracting muscles relax.
11.) Get some sun! Vitamin D is your friend when it comes to boosting your mood and reducing PMS related cramps.
12.) Use Clary Sage essential oil applied topically to your abdomen.
